in transition
Realities in Transition (RiT) is an international project co-funded by the European Union that aims to both explore and support alternative Extended Reality (XR) productions, and also experiment with and further new narratives and creative processes.
RiT is aimed at building a strong, independent European XR creative and activist community, a think tank to tackle current and future challenges in the digital sector.
OUR ACTIVITIES
Establishing XR as a sustainable, inclusive tool for the common good
For us, this means consolidating and sharing XR-related knowledge, tools and methodologies. On a technical level, this involves:
- open source hardware;
- open, virtual technology and environments;
- writing and coding methodologies;
- approaches to creation.
Equally, on a cultural level, particularly by applying critical thinking to XR topics, it brings in:
- creation frameworks and contexts;
- curation and dissemination practices;
- education methods;
- privacy, ethics and sustainability issues.
Supporting alternative XR creation to promote new narratives
New XR creations, exploring new narratives and creative processes will inspire the whole sector and embody the values and methodologies we aim to foster. Consequently, experiments and creations will produce the change we advocate. Realities in Transition will support emerging XR creatives, artists and projects to incorporate common and open source methodologies as well as inclusive and sustainable practices into experimental XR creations.
Consolidating the existing XR creative community
Consolidating existing creative and activist XR initiatives and communities on the one hand means creating opportunities for networking and peer-to-peer learning between existing independent and activist XR initiatives, XR artists, researchers, coders, cultural and creative sector professionals, decision-makers, and the general public interested in XR and coming together to use XR as a common, open and sustainable tool in their work. On the other hand, it implies centralising existing independent and activist XR initiatives and promoting them to help them gain recognition at European level.

THE European XR network
Building an independent XR community
Realities in Transition is aimed at building a strong, independent European XR creative and activist community, a think tank to tackle current and future challenges in the digital sector.
Realities in Transition will have an impact in the six European partner countries - France, Spain, Croatia, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands – who will host local workshops and international camps and residencies, as well as the 27 EU Member States, who will benefit from all of the publications and results the project produces.
The European XR community will be brought into the project and will be:
- involved in the sourcing of artists involved in the project (open calls at European level);
- represented by the team of experts and mentors involved in the project;
- invited to join the independent European XR creative and activist community through online platforms and regular events.
Beyond Europe, the results of the project will be disseminated through partners’ global networks. Moreover, many international actors will be present at events run as part of the project.
